Ukaku
A wing-like kagune that turns its bearer into a high-speed aerial storm of razor-sharp projectiles.
Ukaku is a common type of kagune that manifests as wing-like structures extending from the user's back, typically used for high-speed projectile attacks. Unlike the kakuhou—the organ that produces a kagune—the ukaku is a specific kagune classification. While all ukaku users produce wing-like appendages, the number and independence of these appendages vary by individual, and multiple independent appendages are not a defining trait unique to this type.

- Classification
- Aerial/Speed Specialist
- Primary User
- Rize Kamishiro
- Secondary Users
- None (Kaneki Ken temporarily manifested ukaku-like traits after inheriting Rize's kakuhou, but his primary kagune is rinkaku; Jason is a rinkaku user and never possessed an ukaku)
- Visual Trait
- Feather-like or fin-like projections from the back
- Status
- Common (naturally occurring in many ghouls, e.g., Touka Kirishima, Ayato Kirishima)
Lore & Background
Historically, the most prominent manifestation of this power belonged to Rize Kamishiro, whose tragic fate inadvertently shaped the destiny of Kaneki Ken. Following her death and subsequent dissection by the CCG, fragments of her DNA were used in various experiments, including the creation of artificial ghouls and the partial transfer of her abilities to others. However, ukaku is far from extinct—many natural ukaku users exist, such as Touka Kirishima and Ayato Kirishima. The CCG had a general interest in Rize due to her high kill count, but no specific priority for her capture above all other targets in her district is established in canon.
In Their Own Story
The rain slicked the alleyway as the investigator shouted a warning that was cut short by a blur of motion. From the shadows above, she descended not with a heavy landing, but with a silent glide, her back erupting into a fan of crimson feathers. Before the agent could raise his gun, the air filled with the whine of dozens of detached projectiles, each one seeking flesh. She was no longer grounded; she was a storm of razor-sharp wings, dancing through the chaos while her enemies were reduced to wreckage by the very air around them.
Reader's Guide
The Ukaku manifests as multiple kagune tendrils sprouting from the user's back, resembling feathers or fins rather than solid claws. These structures can be detached and manipulated individually, allowing the user to fire a barrage of high-velocity projectiles that curve mid-air to strike targets from any angle. Visually, the wings appear semi-translucent with a fibrous texture, glowing faintly when active. In combat, this power excels at crowd control and maintaining distance, as the user can strafe rapidly while launching continuous volleys of attacks. The detached pieces can also be used defensively to block incoming blows. Notable users include Rize Kamishiro, who demonstrated the full potential of this ability with terrifying efficiency. Kaneki Ken temporarily utilized a portion of her power after consuming her, giving him access to these winged appendages during critical moments in his early development.
Did You Know?
- Ukaku is a common kagune type, not an extinct or artificially replicated one; many ghouls like Touka Kirishima and Ayato Kirishima are natural ukaku users.
- The ability to fire projectiles at high speed makes ukaku users formidable at range, but their speed comes at the cost of high RC cell consumption.
- Rize Kamishiro's ukaku was powerful, but the CCG's interest in her was due to her high kill count, not a stated priority above all other targets in her district.
